Here’s one way to get people to buy, but that doesn’t require you to offer it at bargain basement prices. You just offer to let customers name their own price. This may seem outrageous at first, but many people find that if they had priced it themselves, they would have charged less anyways than what people decide the product is worth. And, offering it using this strategy removes the objection that people can’t afford it. After all, they are setting their own price!

This doesn’t mean that you don’t tell people what the product is actually worth. You do want to get registration information for people so that you can continue to market them. There are variations on this strategy which offers the product as a free download for payment later, but that requires that you chase after people to get your payment should they later forget.

Your links are what will slide your customers down your sales funnel. It will bring them to an affiliate offer or your own offers. So, you want to pay attention to where you place your link and what image they project.

Links to your offers can go in numerous locations from inside another product you sold to a web page or comment in a blog. As long as the media is electronic (whether text, video, or audio) you have the opportunity to list or say a URL.

Many marketers make the mistake of abusing that facility by placing links to products everywhere and making their front pages giant link farms. This strategy will not only get you penalized by the search engines, but it will also turn off your visitors. More is not better! So, try to spread out your links in the various locations so that your buyers don’t feel like they are being spammed.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in online sales is to not ask for the sale. You don’t just want to display your products in a shopping cart and hope that is enough to entice your buyers. You should have copy that enthuses your buyer and asks for the sale through making a creative offer to the visitor. This way, you can create offers that are too good to refuse, one-time offers, up sell, and cross sell opportunities.

You shouldn’t be afraid to ask for the sale at various times too! Imagine if you walked into a fast food joint that didn’t ask you if you wanted the combo or additional items? Would you think them up on your own? Probably not. Ask for the sale the right way, and your customers will actually feel grateful that you helped guide their buying decision and made it easier for them.

The one-time offer has several advantages to the cross sell and the up sell strategies. It creates urgency in the mind of the buyer and a fear of losing out. Most people are risk averse, so creating a one-time product offer that is so fabulous and available at an amazing price can be a great way to increase sales. You will want to make it clear to the buyer that this is a deal so good, they will kick themselves later for not taking you up on it. And, that because it is so good you are only making the offer this one time and after the price is much higher. Then, stick to your word. Do not offer that package again at that price any other time to the same person. Otherwise, the next time you offer a one-time product, you won’t have any credibility and the urgency will be gone.

Some people think that once you have people on an email list that you’ve got them sold. It’s not that easy to determine who will be responsive to your sales efforts and who won’t. You have to start with the intention of building a list that is focused on buyers, and not just people looking for free information and products. The way to do this is to adopt strategies that reduce a buyer’s objections and resistance to the sales.

If you can start to weed out the people who are actually buying from those who are just in it for a free ride, you can start to target your sales to that demographic that produces a better return on your time investment. After a while, if you find your email list full of freeloaders, you know that the strategies you’ve implemented need to be reviewed and the list targeted more to sell.

Like an attentive boyfriend trying to woo his sweetheart, you can play the part of a suitor with your customer list. That means that you will be helpful to them, and make sure their needs are met. You will pay attention to what they have to say and try to solve their problems for them. And, you will at times offer them sweet nothings because you just like them and appreciate them.

Make anyone feel special and they will eventually fall under your spell. Online this can be a little harder to do, but not impossible. Instead of an attentive sales clerk, you offer the clever copy with deals that are hard to refuse. In each newsletter or email you make sure to send them some free bits of information, software, or coupons to help the buyer feel appreciated and paid attention to. Pretty soon, they will be falling for you and your products.

By now, you understand that offering a free product in exchange for visitor subscriptions to your customer list is a viable strategy to build sales. However, it is one that requires a little finesse to execute correctly. There are so many people out there on the Internet who are looking for freebies, and not wanting to give anything in return, that you can end up with a lot of bad emails in your list or poor sales. And, if you don’t offer just the right product for free, you can end up losing sales instead of gaining them.

You need to learn how to avoid the freebie seekers by making the free product a bonus and not the main promotion. Instead, promote your newsletter and offer a free product on the side. Also, make sure that the products you give away are also directly related to your own market niche.

If you don’t have time to create new products, you can still widen the appeal of your old products by issuing them in multiple formats. That stale ebook with great content can be converted into a dynamic series of teaching videos. It may be the same content, but many people prefer to use information in different ways. Some are more audio, others more visual. Creating a similar product in a different format will appeal to a different audience and create more sales for you.

Don’t forget that with new technology gadgets out there like mobile phones and Ipod players that you can take advantage of the fascination and early adoption phase to promote your products in these formats. The market will not be as saturated as other types of formats and so your products can be more visible and available to that segment of the population.

You may understand your target demographic thoroughly and can market to it, but what do you do about the various inconsistencies in income, knowledge base, and personal likes and dislikes? Well, you don’t really have to worry about it too much as long as you offer your customers a wide range of options, even when the content you are selling is still the same.

For instance, you can sell two differently priced products, but they both be on the subject of diets. One may just be a low-fat recipe book for a few dollars and another may be a full-fledged diet program complete with menus for over $50. That way, someone interested in that topic can pick either or both to add to their shopping cart to suit their budgets. It’s also a good idea to offer the same product in different formats like video, audio, and text to get people who may have a preference one way or another.

If you have a social networking site, or even just a discussion forum on your site, you can ask for the sale during member registration. The new members will already be trusting you somewhat in order to divulge personal information like their email address or name. So, you can use that familiarity to help promote some additional products at that time.

One version of this is to have check boxes that they need to uncheck it if they don’t want a product. That can be a little sneaky and the best bet is to be as honest and straightforward as possible. Maybe they don’t want to buy the current special, but want to sign up to your newsletter. Don’t forget to include that option in your list of check boxes. In some cases, you can check the newsletter automatically and leave the paid offers unchecked, and that will be seen as having some integrity.
